I was deeply inspired by one of my Old
Testament professors sharing this event of the Bible history, where God Himself intervene
into the life of Abraham- it’s a descriptive passage but the beauty of the
Bible; it has the eternal relevance (applicable to all people at all times).
I suggest you read the whole chapter but here
for the word limit I just place verses 10 & 17 to be more meaningful for understanding this devotion.
V10. Abram brought all these (a heifer, a
goat and a ram- each of three years along with a dove and a young pigeon.) to God,
cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the birds,
however, he did not cut in half.
V17. When the sun had set and darkness had
fallen, a firepot with a blazing torch appeared and passed between the
pieces. (On that day God made a covenant with Abram...)
We must remember that God is a being but He
never lies like us!
The point that I am trying to make is once
God makes a covenant with a person, He remains faithful; and never breaks to
His people, at the same time He expects us to be faithful to Him and His
agreement.
Yes, Covenant, in other words, Is an
agreement – An agreement generally takes between two parties/ people. Great
news here is that it is God who makes the covenant/agreement and He bounds
Himself by His covenant.
In Ancient times what used to happen is whenever
people make a covenant – what happens is they used to bring the animals and cut
them in two and place it on both sides of the Alter probably. After those
people who makes the covenant will walk in between those cut animals, signifying
“look if I breach/break the covenant made with you- what happened to these
animals let it happen (same thing) to me. In other words, let I will be cut and
be killed for my unfaithfulness.
When we look at this portion of the Bible or
in all human history, God is making covenant’s with mankind – He Is always
takes the initiative in making an agreement with us out of His love; that’s so
great it's like a president of a superpower nation taking initiative, walks to
your nation, state, city/town or village, walks down to our street and visits our
house and asks you to be his friend (yes, it is what happens a great God –
intervenes into people’s lives and making an agreement and tells “I am your God
and you will be my people.
When we look at this covenant between God and
Abram – he brings animals and cuts them into two halves and places on both side
but God did not allow Abram to walk in between the cut animals but V17. When
the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a firepot/light (God) with a
blazing torch appeared and passed between the pieces.
Yes, God has passed in between the cut
animals, signifying “look Abraham (if I breach/fails) if I don’t keep the covenant
made to you “LET ME BE KILLED” and “CUT INTO HALF”
Meaning “you can trust me; I will do definitely.”
And we see in Genesis 22- I swear on myself – God takes the initiative &
fulfills it. Today we know the promises and covenant God made to Abraham are
fulfilled. Hallelujah!
Today, we must remember the covenant made
with Abraham is to express God’s intention to save all the people in the world.
The covenant is not made for an individual blessing but to protect the promised
seed (if you haven’t read check “PROTOEVANGELION- The first gospel” in the
Labels column) But to save all the people through one insignificant people.
I want to tell you that, sometimes we may
forget the covenants and promises we made with God (usually in India we make
new promises on 31st December and give on 10th January)
And we may even forget what God had promised
us, But God never forgot them- He did not strike them off because of our
weakness and unfaithfulness but still working on it!
Let us remember the Promises God made to us!
why not we thank Him for His long patience and love, if possible, why can’t our
heart cry out!
It is always said and I always remember “God
gives, gives, and forgives but Man gets, gets and forgets.”
In a situation like this around the planet during this pandemic, you may
think about your life covered with darkness – remember in the beginning when God
created the heavens and the earth. When the earth was formless and empty,
darkness was over the surface of the deep and the spirit of God was hovering over
the darkness. God is still on His Throne (Control), let us, place our past and
future in front of God, He who passed between the pieces placed by Abraham at
the darkness; as a smoking firepot with a blazing torch (light) shall appear and
pass into our lives. For the verse tells us, Hebrew 13:8 Jesus Christ is the
same yesterday and today and forever,
God is still busy in writing a beautiful chapters of His child- while enemy is whispers Give up - don't loose Hope even death could not able to hold Him and He will not Forsake His child- He is working in our lives Amen!
God is still busy in writing a beautiful chapters of His child- while enemy is whispers Give up - don't loose Hope even death could not able to hold Him and He will not Forsake His child- He is working in our lives Amen!
I hope, this devotion is useful to
you – Let us, know by writing back.
